Gnurr Kett is an island that lies about 2,000 miles south of New Crobuzon and about 500 miles east of the Cymek Desert. The island is several hundred miles long, and only its northern shores are reputed to be "civilized".

The island and its capital city, Kohnid, have a reputation for producing scholarly works. Some of this knowledge is derived from a colony of anophelii that they maintain. The anophelii colony is the only known remnants of what was known as the Malarial Queendom. As a result of the queendom's reputation, the anophelii are kept carefully isolated from outside sources of knowledge.
